Listening Where Heaven Meets the Mountains

Laura Longville

There are places where beauty seems to quiet the soul before a single word is spoken. Lake Molveno, nestled in the Italian Dolomites, is one of those sacred places. Towering mountains, crystal-clear water, and the stillness of creation invite us to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember that God is near.

Last month, I had the incredible privilege of serving as a therapist during the Contemplative Thrive Retreat, listening to the stories of women who have dedicated their lives to serving around the world. While the scenery is breathtaking, it is the people who have captured my heart.

As I sat with these remarkable global workers, I was reminded that they carry many of the same burdens we all do. They grieve the loss of loved ones. They wrestle with disappointment, infertility, chronic health concerns, anxiety, depression, and seasons of hopelessness. They experience relationship conflict, questions about their calling, and the exhaustion that comes from simply trying to keep going.

The difference is that many of them carry these burdens far from home.

They often live in cultures that are not their own, speak languages they are still learning, and serve in places where trusted friends, family, counselors, or faith communities may be thousands of miles away. Isolation becomes more than loneliness—it becomes the quiet backdrop of daily life. Even simple tasks require extra emotional energy. Grief has fewer familiar places to land. Celebration is often shared from a distance. The weight of ministry, combined with the realities of cross-cultural living, can magnify every struggle.

And yet, there is extraordinary courage in this community.

One of the greatest gifts I can offer is not advice or quick solutions. It is the ministry of presence. To listen without rushing. To create a safe place where tears are welcomed, silence is honored, and stories are held with compassion. Healing often begins when someone feels deeply seen, heard, and understood.

Jesus modeled this kind of presence throughout His ministry. He walked with people before He instructed them. He listened before He responded. He met people in their pain and reminded them they were never alone.

As you read this, would you take a moment to pray for global workers serving around the world? Pray that they would experience God's nearness in tangible ways. Pray for strength when they are weary, hope when discouragement settles in, wisdom for the road ahead, and trusted companions who will walk beside them.

It is a sacred privilege to bear witness to these stories. Every conversation reminds me that healing is rarely found in having all the answers. More often, it is discovered in the quiet grace of being fully present with one another—and with the God who has promised never to leave us nor forsake us.

Thank you for your support and prayers.
